Ahmedabad, Nov 3 (PTI) A mother-son duo selling goods on a footpath were killed, and a couple was injured after an SUV allegedly driven by an inebriated man ploughed into them in the Nikol area of the city, police said on Tuesday.

The SUV driver, Viral Chaudhary, was arrested at the scene following the crash late on Monday night, and six cans of foreign beer were recovered from his vehicle, traffic police inspector S I Sumra said.

Gujarat is a 'dry' state where the storage and consumption of liquor is strictly prohibited.

The vehicle crashed into people standing near the street vendor, seriously injuring pedestrians, an official said.

Poonam Nagwadiya (30) and her son Sagar (15) sustained serious injuries and later died during treatment, Sumra said.

Kartik Vasoya and his wife Snehal, who were purchasing goods at the time, also sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Motor Vehicles Act and the Gujarat Prohibition Act, police said.
