Barabanki (UP), Nov 1 (PTI) Three people were killed and one was seriously injured after a speeding SUV rammed into two motorcycles on the Ayodhya highway here on Sunday evening, police said.

The incident triggered a protest by locals, who allegedly thrashed the SUV driver and later blocked the highway for nearly an hour.

Anoop (18), Vimlesh (19), Anil Yadav (17) and Gaya Prasad (17), all residents of Dharouli village, were travelling on two motorcycles to attend a community feast when a speeding SUV hit the two-wheelers near Baisanpurwa village under the Ramsanehighat police station area. One of the motorcycles was dragged several metres due to the impact, police said.

While Anoop, Vimlesh and Anil died in the accident, Gaya sustained serious injuries. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, they said.

Following the accident, angry villagers blocked the highway and allegedly thrashed the SUV driver. Police reached the spot and rescued him from the crowd.

The blockade led to long queues of vehicles on both sides of the highway for around an hour.

Circle Officer Saurabh Srivastava reached the spot and brought the situation under control, police said.

Minister of state and local MLA Satish Chandra Sharma also visited the accident site. He later visited the community health centre to enquire about the condition of the injured teenager.
