New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) The BJP on Saturday said a sharp decline in India’s extreme poverty rate, noted in the latest World Bank report, reflected the impact of sustained policy efforts by the Narendra Modi government.
Citing the report and other data in a post on X, BJP national president Nitin Nabin said, “Bharat’s progress is reflected in lives transformed and opportunities created”.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the spirit of Antyodaya continues to guide our agenda of inclusive development, ensuring that the benefits of growth reach the last person in the queue and accelerating Bharat’s journey towards Viksit Bharat @ 2047,” he added.
The World Bank report said India’s extreme poverty rate fell to 2.6 per cent in 2023 from 27.1 per cent in 2011, with an estimated 496 million people lifted out of poverty.
The report, titled ‘India Poverty and Equity Brief: October 2026’, said the estimates were based on the lower-middle-income poverty threshold of USD 4.20 per day and the extreme poverty threshold of USD 3 per day, measured at 2021 purchasing power parity (PPP).
India had made significant progress in reducing poverty across monetary and non-monetary dimensions over the past decade, recording “one of the fastest poverty declines” in the world, the report said.
BJP national media convenor Ashish Usha Agarwal, citing the report in a separate post on X, said the share of India’s population living below the lower-middle-income poverty line had declined from 57.7 per cent to 16.1 per cent.
He described the decline in extreme poverty as a “remarkable milestone” in the country’s journey towards inclusive growth and poverty reduction, and said it reflected sustained policy efforts and the expanding reach of development initiatives.
“This is a New India, moving towards prosperity with inclusive growth,” Agarwal said.
He added that under Modi’s leadership, poverty alleviation, financial inclusion and improved living standards had been placed at the centre of governance.
