Kolkata, Oct 31 (PTI) Hundreds of supporters of a Hindu organisation on Saturday staged a march towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, demanding security for minority communities in the neighbouring country, police said.
The protesters, however, could not reach the main gate of the diplomatic mission as Kolkata Police stopped the procession with barricades around 100 metres from the premises in Park Circus area.
The march began near Sealdah railway station, with supporters of the outfit Bangasena, dressed in saffron attire, accompanied by sadhus.
The protesters also demanded the release of incarcerated monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and an end to the alleged persecution of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.
"Protesters belonging to a Hindu organisation assembled near the Deputy High Commission to press for their demands. No untoward incident was reported, and they dispersed peacefully in the afternoon," an officer of Karaya police station said.
The Bangasena supporters subsequently staged a sit-in for some time, disrupting traffic movement in the area.
This was the second such demonstration outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission here this month.
On October 3, members of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India and sadhus staged a sit-in outside the mission, raising similar demands and submitting a memorandum to the Deputy High Commission authorities.
