Beed, Apr 22 (PTI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members took to the streets on Wednesday morning in Beed city of central Maharashtra to protest against the Congress' stance on women's reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, and labelled the Opposition outfit as "anti-women".
The BJP group leader in the Beed Municipal Council Sarikatai Yogesh Kshirsagar led the agitation and accused the Congress of being "anti-women" and obstructing their progress.
The protest, which commenced at 10:30 am, saw a large turnout of women activists and BJP office-bearers. The air resonated with fiery slogans such as "Hum Bharat ki nari hai, phool nahi chingari hai" (We are the women of India; not flowers, but sparks) and "Congress cha dhikkar aso" (condemn the Congress).
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Kshirsagar launched a scathing attack on the Congress, which last week voted against a Constitution Amendment Bill to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816.
She stated that while the BJP-led government at the Centre took a historic step toward women's empowerment by pushing for reservation for them in legislative bodies, the main Opposition party derailed the process.
"It is deeply unfortunate that a party like the Congress is standing against the empowerment of women. For years, they only used slogans about women's rights, but their current opposition has exposed their true face. They are a hurdle in the path of women achieving equal opportunity in political, social, and economic spheres," the BJP leader maintained.
She emphasized that the BJP remains committed to the dignity and progress of women, noting that the reservation policy would provide a significant boost to their leadership across the country.
