Astronomer Soman flags pH change rising water levels of Lonar Lake

Thane, Apr 11 (PTI) Renowned astronomer and space researcher DK Soman has expressed concern over deterioration of Lonar Lake in Maharashtra's Buldhana district, which is the world's largest basaltic impact crater formed 52,000 years ago by a high-velocity meteor strike.
Addressing a science programme here on Friday, Soman said the crater, a rare geological and ecological site attracting scientists and visitors from across the globe, contains saline water with a high pH level, making it scientifically significant.
"The pH level (which measures how acidic or basic the water is) of the water is also changing. Despite the ongoing summer, the water level in the lake has suddenly risen, submerging ancient Hemadpanthi temples located within the crater," he said.
The rise may be due to human activities such as borewell drilling in the surrounding areas or seepage from nearby water bodies, Soman added.
The authorities must investigate it and take corrective measures immediately, said Soman, also known as an almanac (panchang) maker.
'Panchang' is rooted in astronomy rather than astrology, reflecting India's ancient timekeeping traditions, he told the gathering.
