Chennai, Mar 17 (PTI) The MDMK, an ally of the ruling DMK, released its manifesto for the upcoming assembly elections on Tuesday.

The manifesto addresses several regional and social issues, including state's autonomy, fishermen's welfare, abolition of Governor's post, permanent closure of Sterlite copper plant, total abolition of child marriage, prohibition among many others.

Releasing the document, MDMK founder Vaiko said a dedicated panel travelled across the state for three months, incorporated recommendations and feed back from the people, to ensure the promises reflect the ground reality.

As part of the DMK-led alliance, the MDMK has been allotted four seats to contest.

While three seats will be contested on the DMK's 'Rising Sun' symbol, the fourth will be on its own symbol.

Speaking to reporters, Vaiko said, "State autonomy alone can establish India's democracy and the principle of federalism. We will take this forward and shape our actions so other states accept this policy. I will meet the Chief Ministers of important states to emphasise its necessity. We also want the removal of Seemai Karuvelam (Neltuma juliflora) trees that are harmful for agriculture."
He further said his party has commenced the election campaign for the assembly polls and took part in the state-wide demonstration conducted by DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance over the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders.

"I took part in the demonstration against LPG shortage in Madurai. We will strive hard to see our alliance under the leadership of DMK sweeps the polls," he said.
