Mumbai, Oct 30 (PTI) Bank credit grew 17.94 per cent on an annual basis to Rs 232.54 lakh crore till October 15, outpacing the 16.6 per cent growth in deposits, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Friday.
Bank deposits stood at Rs 284.37 lakh crore as of October 15, 2026, compared to Rs 243.88 lakh crore till October 17, 2025, growing at 16.60 per cent year-on-year, data showed.
According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, bank credit stood at Rs 232.54 lakh crore as of October 15, 2026, from 197.17 lakh crore on October 17, 2025, registering a growth of 17.94 per cent.
The higher credit growth can be attributed to surplus liquidity in the banking system in the early part of October, along with the festive season in India. The banking system was flush with liquidity after huge FCNR (B) deposits garnered by banks under the RBI's concessional window.
Liquidity surplus in the banking system has ranged between Rs 2 lakh crore and Rs 4.5 lakh crore between October 1 and October 15, RBI data showed.
In August and September, system liquidity increased substantially due to the recent measures undertaken to attract capital inflows. As measured by the net position under the LAF, system liquidity averaged a daily surplus of Rs 5.9 lakh crore since the last MPC meeting in August 2026.
The average daily net absorption under the LAF increased from Rs 1.2 lakh crore in July 2026 to Rs 5.8 lakh crore in August and further to Rs 7.8 lakh crore in September.
Further, investments by the banks in central and state government securities rose 9.64 per cent year-on-year to Rs 77.32 lakh crore as of October 15, 2026, from Rs 70.53 lakh crore till October 17, 2025.
Of the total, investments in the central government securities have major portion, which increased to Rs 77.12 lakh crore as of October 15, 2026, compared to Rs 70.42 lakh crore a year earlier, RBI data showed.
