High Security Registration Plate mandatory for vehicles from July 1 Maharashtra minister

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) will be mandatory from July 1 in Maharashtra for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019 in order to further strengthen vehicle security and make their identification more secure and transparent, state Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Thursday.
He said the state government had given a deadline up to December 31, 2025 to replace older number plates with HSRP, which has now been further extended to June 30.
"High Security Registration Number is an extremely important mechanism to prevent vehicle theft, fake number plates, and misuse of vehicles in criminal activities. As per the guidelines of the central government, it has been made mandatory to install high security registration number plates on old vehicles in the state as well," the minister said.
Therefore, all vehicle owners should take advantage of the extension period and get HSRP installed in time, he said, adding that vehicles without HSRP will fined Rs 1,000.
Vehicle owners should visit the Transport Department's official website and book an advance appointment for installing HSRP. He also clarified that the concerned vehicle owners must complete this process before June 30.
"Vehicles of those who have not installed HSRP within the deadline or have not booked an appointment will be checked through a special inspection campaign on the roads starting from July 1, 2026. Action will be taken against violators as per the Motor Vehicles Act, and a compounding fee of up to Rs 1,000 will be charged," he said.
Sarnaik also appealed to vehicle owners to register for HSRP only through the official website and not fall prey to unauthorised persons or agents.
He further urged all vehicle owners in the state to treat this process with seriousness from the perspective of vehicle security and cooperate with the government.
