Gandhinagar, May 6 (PTI) The Gujarat government on Wednesday said the state-run road transport corporation is now generating nearly 30 per cent of its daily revenue through cashless payment modes.
The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) enables ticket payments through multiple digital options, including UPI, debit cards, credit cards, and mobile-based online payments, even for onboard bookings. Notably, around 85 per cent of digital transactions in GSRTC are conducted via UPI, an official release stated.
"Digital payments are rapidly transforming passenger experience and revenue streams for the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC), with nearly 30 per cent of its daily earnings now coming through cashless modes," said the release.
The adoption of digital transactions has improved GSRTC's operational efficiency and transparency. With a fleet of over 8,000 buses and increasing use of mobile app bookings, the corporation is seeing a shift toward quicker, more convenient services for passengers, it noted.
This forms part of the state government's ongoing efforts to expand digital governance under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel's leadership, according to the release.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who holds the transport portfolio, has also stressed on expanding bus connectivity to remote areas while strengthening digital infrastructure to enhance passenger convenience and increase daily ridership, the release said.
"On average, GSRTC serves around 27 lakh passengers daily, generating approximately Rs 12 crore in revenue," the release quoted Sanghavi as saying.
Of this, nearly 30 per cent now comes through digital payment modes. Daily digital collections have more than doubled from around Rs 1 crore last year to over Rs 2 crore currently and continue to grow steadily, he maintained.
"We are moving towards a cashless economy, and this move is part of the larger aim of increasing the digital ecosystem," Sanghavi opined.
GSRTC aims to further scale up cashless transactions.
"We plan to increase the share of digital payments to 60 per cent-70 per cent in the coming months by extending these facilities to commercial services and passenger pass systems as well," an GSRTC official said.
