Mumbai, Apr 25 (PTI) It was just another foundation day event, comprising a look back at over three decades of institution-building efforts and a dose of entertainment, until an old Hindi number struck up as part of a group dance medley.
Piercing his way through colleagues who formed a dance troupe, Sebi's whole time member K C Varshney emerged at centre stage, swaying to the song 'Mein Nikla Gaddi Leke'.
A few moves into the dance sequence, he turned into the leader that he is - Sebi WTMs are second in hierarchy only after the chairman - extracting the best of dance moves from fellow dancers.
The audience inside the hall at a popular convention centre in the financial capital, comprising Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Varshney's boss Tuhin Kanta Pandey, other colleagues, and important stakeholders in the market ecosystem, was visibly stunned by the efforts as Varshney's troupe went about their predecided routine.
Within moments, the speakers blared diaspora singer Sukhbir's groovy number "Aisha", prompting Varshney to urge the crowds to join him and continue the performance.
A few stanzas later, it was time for Varshney to step back and let the other members of the 60-member troupe to come in spotlight as the performance approached its end.
Varshney returned to centre stage one last time as two of A R Rehman's most iconic numbers - Jai Ho and Vande Mataram - played, bringing the performance celebrating India's rich diversity to an end.
Later, one of the troupe members disclosed that a team of 60 staffers, including a WTM, had been practising for nearly a month.
Post-performance, Varshney received the well-deserved pat on the back from Pandey and a few words of encouragement from Union Finance Minister Sitharaman.
