A peek into the real situation in Kashmir

It has been over two months since Jammu & Kashmir entered a state of lockdown. The 'paradise on earth' which has suffered much at the hands of militants and divisive politics, hasn't been able to breathe easy since the early nineties. Abrogation of Article 370 on August 5 split the nation with its views on the matter.

While Kashmiri Pandits and Modi supporters have hailed the decision, not many are happy about dividing the state into two Union Territories. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, too, made it a point to remind India that the act defies conditions stipulated in the Simla agreement of not unilaterally dissolving the semi-autonomous state of J&K.

Other nations are now raising questions about the prolonged lockdown. US President Donald Trump recently urged PM Modi to lift restrictions on the state. THE WEEK's Senior Special Correspondent in Srinagar, Tariq Bhat, talks about what sentiments in the valley have been like since the Article 370 was repealed.
