Doctor,” he said, “I think I’m losing my concentration.”

He was 52, the CEO of a successful company, and convinced that something was wrong with his brain. Meetings would drift. He would open his laptop to answer an email and, five minutes later, find himself wondering why flamingos stand on one leg or remembering a cricket match from 20 years ago. While driving home, his mind wandered so completely that he sometimes reached his destination with almost no recollection of the journey. “I’m becoming absent-minded,” he sighed. “My brain just... switches off.”


I smiled. “It doesn’t switch off,” I said. “It switches inward.” For most of the last century, neuroscientists believed the brain was either working or resting. It was only in the early 2000s, when researchers peered into healthy brains using functional MRI, that they made a surprising discovery. Even when people were lying quietly, doing absolutely nothing, a remarkably consistent network of brain regions became intensely active. They named it the default mode network, a rather unimaginative title for one of the most fascinating discoveries in modern neuroscience.

If I had been allowed to name it, I might have called it the storyteller, or perhaps the wandering poet. Because this is the network that awakens when the outside world grows quiet. It is where memory meets imagination, where yesterday is woven into tomorrow, where regrets are replayed, conversations rehearsed, futures imagined and identities quietly assembled. As Virginia Woolf wrote, “The mind receives a myriad impressions... an incessant shower of innumerable atoms.” The default mode network is the gentle curator of that shower, forever arranging the fragments into the story we call ourselves.

Curiously, this network is at its busiest when we appear to be doing nothing at all. It comes alive while staring out of train windows, walking on the beach, sitting beneath a tree, standing in the shower, or absent-mindedly stirring a cup of tea. It is why solutions to impossible problems often arrive while folding laundry rather than sitting in front of a computer. It is why melodies appear in the middle of the night, why novelists discover endings while gardening, and why so many scientific breakthroughs have emerged during moments of quiet reflection rather than frantic effort.

Albert Einstein once remarked, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” Neuroscience might add that creativity is intelligence finally being left alone. Yet, there is a delicate balance. Left unchecked, the same network can become the birthplace of rumination, anxiety and depression, endlessly replaying yesterday’s mistakes or tomorrow’s fears. As Mark Twain quipped, “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” It turns out our brains are remarkably talented at writing tragedies that never make it to the stage.

When I finished explaining this to him, he looked relieved. “So daydreaming isn’t laziness?”

“Quite the opposite,” I replied. “It’s one of the most sophisticated things your brain does.”

He laughed.

“My wife has been telling me for years that I’m always lost in my own world.”

I nodded. “She was probably right.”

The irony is that in an age obsessed with productivity, we have become frightened of stillness. Every empty moment is filled with a notification, a podcast, a headline, a scrolling thumb. We have forgotten that silence is not the absence of thought; it is often where our deepest thinking begins. Perhaps that is why the poet Rainer Maria Rilke urged us to “live the questions now”. The brain seems to agree. It spends much of its quietest moments doing precisely that.

As he stood up to leave, he asked one final question. “So, doctor... what should I do when my mind starts wandering again?” I thought for a moment. “Follow it,” I said. “Just don’t believe everything it tells you.”

After all these years of operating on the brain, I have come to suspect that the greatest mystery is not movement, language or memory. It is consciousness itself. Somewhere among hundred billion neurons, our hopes, fears, dreams, humour and imagination emerge from electrical impulses we barely understand. The default mode network reminds us that even when we appear to be doing nothing, the brain is quietly composing the autobiography of our lives. And, perhaps, that is why some of our best ideas arrive in the shower. The brain, unlike the rest of us, has finally escaped the meetings.
