A 20-year-old Indian man has been taken into custody while trying to escape after allegedly killing his girlfriend, a 19-year-old college student, in Arizona, United States. Varun Batchigari is suspected to irst-degree murder in the strangulation of 19-year-old college student Julissa Rubi Salazar.

The alleged murder happened inside her apartment near the University of Arizona in Tucson on Thursday, according to US media reports.

Batchigari killed Salazar after she decided to break up with him over his history of domestic violence, the report added. He had also sexually assaulted her. Salazar’s family requested a welfare check on their daughter, following which the police found her body with signs of trauma.

The police said they suspected Batchigari after he allegedly stole her phone and credit cards and sent a series of messages to her mother, which sparked concern with her family.

Police started a search, which revealed that he had escaped to  Tucson International Airport, where he took a flight to Houston that connected to another flight out to Berlin. He was aiming to fly to India, the report added.

Before the alleged murder happened, her roommates reported hearing loud screaming from her room. Following this, her roommates texted Salazar asking if she was alright, only to receive a message saying she was fine and it was just an argument.

According to local media reports, Batchigari had been attending the nearby University of Arizona, where he was studying business analytics. However, he was expelled for a fight and had a history of domestic violence.

There was also a criminal case against him for assault – knowingly causing injury filed in Pima County Court on May 26, according to records viewed by The Post. One woman claimed that Batchigari had sexually assaulted her on Halloween, but she didn’t report the incident.

Batchigari had also recently lost his job, which put his visa status in danger. He will be booked into Pima County Adult Detention on his first-degree murder charge.
