Indian-origin seasoned hiker Vikram Mubayi, who went missing during a solo hike in California, has been found dead. The 23-year-old was a PhD student at UC Santa Barbara.

According to reports, he had spent the last weekend in the Big Pine Lakes region. But, upon not hearing from him, his sibling put up a social media post stating, “My brother Vikram is 6’3’’, 170 lbs,  dark hair, and has been out of contact since 8:30 p.m. yesterday  [August 1] in the Big Pine Lakes area in the Eastern Sierra.”

He added that his last contact with Mubayi was on August 1 at around 8:30 pm. He had shared his GPS location while out on the trail with his family. When he did not return or respond to calls, his family alerted the authorities.

A search operation was launched by the Inyo County Search and Rescue and the California Highway Patrol. On August 3, the remains of Mubayi were found in the Inyo National Forest.

Though investigators have not disclosed the details surrounding his death, preliminary investigation indicates no foul play. The circumstances which led to his death currently remain under investigation.

Mubayi was born and raised in Hong Kong before his family moved to the US. His family, through a social media post, described him as a seasoned hiker.
