Speaking at a United Nations Security Council open debate on the situation in the Middle East on Tuesday, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, expressed concern over the escalating hostilities in the region.

"There has been a worrying resumption of attacks and escalation of hostilities. This is deeply concerning and India calls for an immediate de-escalation of tensions," Harish said.

The ambassador condemned the recent attacks on commercial vessels, including GFS Galaxy, MT Al Bahiyah, and MT Mombasa, during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.

He said the attacks claimed the life of one Indian national, while another remains missing. Several others were injured, some of them seriously.

"India has consistently condemned acts of violence targeting seafarers and disrupting free and safe navigation through international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz," Harish said.

Reiterating New Delhi's position, he said India strongly supports dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable path to ensuring peace, security, and stability in the region.

"The targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways, in keeping with international law, must be restored at the earliest," he added.

Harish emphasised that India has significant strategic and economic interests in West Asia, with the country's trade and energy security closely tied to the region's stability.

He noted that India maintains bilateral annual trade of around USD 180 billion with the region, has cumulative foreign direct investment exceeding USD 31 billion, and receives more than USD 52 billion in remittances annually from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

The ambassador also highlighted the welfare of the Indian diaspora, noting that around 10 million Indians live and work across the Gulf region, making their safety and well-being a top priority for the Indian government.
