An annual Pride Parade event in Berlin was cancelled after a driver in a minivan rammed through the crowd, injuring 16 people.

One woman died after the incident, and three others were reported to be critically injured in what is being considered a terror attack.

The incident occurred during the Berlin Pride Celebration known as the Christopher Street Day Berlin at around 10 pm. Police have identified the suspect and released a photograph. His motivation for orchestrating the attack is unknown.

Police spokesman Florian Nath said that the individual was known to the police and was associated with the Islamist scene in Berlin. Police have launched a widespread search to trace Abdul B.

The police description says he is a slim man, about 1.90 m tall, with black hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black hoodie and white pants. He is 21 years old and was just released from a juvenile detention centre in May 2026.

The car the suspect used was a private vehicle. It is unclear who owns the vehicle.

According to German news agency Die Welt, Abdul lived at an apartment building with several siblings and his mother. The neighbours told Die Welt that Abdul had also boasted about alleged attack plans and dissatisfaction with the situation in Germany.

Police special forces raided an apartment building in the Schöneberg district of Berlin hours after the attack. At approximately 1:10 a.m, an explosion was heard at the registered address of Abdul B.  Following that, a helmeted individual was seen running down a curtain behind a first-floor window. 

More than 2,200 police officers were deployed since the Pride event began on Saturday morning, and a strong presence remains even after the attack. In addition, several hundred officers were deployed throughout the city. The public prosecutor's office is also involved in the investigation.

Police officers also searched the area between Potsdamer Platz and the south side of the Tiergarten tunnel, searching for evidence, WELT reported.

At 10 pm on Saturday, a driver in a white minivan drove along the Ahornsteig, parallel to Lennéstraße, in the Tiergarten park, striking several people, police reported.

The car then collided into a tree, and the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. Police believe the perpetrator left Tiergarten for another part of Berlin.

"We still have no information whatsoever regarding his specific motivations, the exact sequence of events, or his role in the crime," a spokesperson said.

"It is part of the investigation whether there was a second phase of the attack after the driving incident. Whether someone then left the vehicle and attacked people with possible bladed weapons, injuring them," Nath stated.

Witnesses also said that several were injured with stab wounds and that they saw a man in black carrying a machete.

Police have asked citizens who come across the suspect to avoid direct contact and call 110, the emergency number.

The Christopher Street Day is an annual LGBT pride event held in the second half of July.
