The US House of Representatives has passed a war powers resolution by a narrow 215-208 vote, aiming to curtail President Trump's authority to continue military operations against Iran without congressional approval, marking a significant political setback for the president. This resolution, supported by all Democrats and four Republicans, invokes the War Powers Resolution of 1973 to compel the cessation of military engagements not authorized by Congress, following a three-month conflict that has reportedly cost over $100 billion and caused global economic turmoil, including a spike in gas prices and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, which has impacted crude oil markets and fueled inflation.

In a significant political setback for President Donald Trump, the US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending the three-month-long conflict with Iran.

The resolution, passed by a narrow 215-208 vote, seeks to limit the president's authority to continue military operations against Iran without congressional approval. Four Republicans — Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson — joined Democrats in backing the measure.

The vote marks the first time the House has successfully passed such a resolution after several earlier attempts failed, highlighting growing unease over the war and its economic consequences. Each time Democrats have pushed forward the war powers resolution, the vote tallies have inched higher as political unease with the US war swells.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York had urged Republicans to support the measure, calling the conflict a "reckless and costly war of choice" that has reportedly cost American taxpayers more than $100 billion and weakened the country's position relative to Iran.

The resolution was introduced by New York Democrat Gregory Meeks, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

"I am thrilled that we've had the opportunity to have some members from the Republican side stand up. I'm really thrilled and proud of my Democratic colleagues, because every Democrat, every single one voted for this," Meeks told reporters after the proceedings.

The resolution invokes the provisions of the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which requires presidents to end military engagements not authorised by Congress within 60 days, unless lawmakers grant an extension for military necessity.

According to an Associated Press report, ever since the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on February 28, Americans have seen gas prices spike at the pumps, adding to inflationary pressure on consumer spending.

Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil chokepoint, leaving the global crude markets in turmoil and driving inflation in several countries.
