Bangladesh is reportedly reshuffling important positions in the advisory council of the Interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, right ahead of its upcoming elections.
Sources who spoke to tabloid daily Manabzamin confirmed that the changes will be announced on Tuesday.
The report said that the current Home Affairs Advisor, Lt. J. Ob. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury may be replaced by the current Security Advisor, Dr. Khalilur Rahman.
The sources claimed that the changes are being made following the killing of the Inqilab Manch spokesperson. Sharif Osman Hadi. There has been a growing demand, from groups like the Inquilab Manch, for the resignation of the Home Affairs advisor due to the council's failure to arrest people involved in the incident.
Right after the interim government took power, after the deposition of former leader Shiekh Hasina, Brigadier General (retd.) Sakhawat Hossain was given the responsibility of Home Affairs Advisor. He was removed from the position after he made comments on the Awami League.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury will continue to serve as the Minister of Agriculture.
The special assistant to the Chief Adviser Khoda Bakhsh Chowdry will also be relieved of his duties, according to reports.
The killing has led to a law and order crisis in the country. A mob set fire to two left-leaning media houses, The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, following the death of the youth leader Two cultural organisations were also targeted.
Some high-ranking police officers will also be reshuffled just ahead of the elections.
The police were under scrutiny for their failure to prevent some of the mob incidents, including the lynching of the minority man Dipu Das Chandra in Mymensingh.
Top police positions like the commissioners of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) will be subject to reshuffling.
Police officials have reported that the number of citizens who are breaking the law have increased, leading to a number of violent incidents. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam told Ajker Patrika said that the law and order crisis could be normalised by force alone.
The country is currently going through a major unrest following the death of Hadi. Motaleb Sikder, the divisional leader of the National Workers' Party (NCP) affiliate organization in Khulna, was shot in the head on Monday.
