US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned Russian President Vladimir Putin of “very severe consequences” if he doesn’t agree to stop the war in Ukraine after their meeting in Alaska on August 15.

"Yes. There will be consequences. I don't have to say (on the type of consequences). There will be very severe consequences," Trump said while answering a reporter’s question during a press meet at the Kennedy Centre.

Both Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska's Anchorage on Friday to discuss the potential ceasefire. This would be the first US-Russia summit since 2021, when former President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy is unlikely to be invited to the meeting even though several European countries have been insisting that the "path to peace" cannot be decided without Kyiv.

Trump said if the first meeting goes well, a second meeting might be held soon, potentially involving Zelenskiyy.

"If the first meeting goes okay, we will have a quick second one. I would like to do it almost immediately. We will have a quick second meeting between President Putin, President Zelenskyy, and me if they would like to have me there,” he said.

The US President, however, made it clear that the second meeting would not take place if he didn’t get the answers he wanted in the first meeting.

"There may be no second meeting because if I feel that it's not appropriate to have it because I didn't get the answers that we have to have, then we are not going to have a second meeting," he asserted.
