Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay died on Monday after a protracted stay in the hospital following a shot to the head in June, his family declared on Monday.

Uribe (39) was a presidential hopeful from the Colombia's right-wing Democratic Center party, founded by former president Alvaro Uribe. The two men are not related.

He was shot three times (twice in the head) in Bogota during a campaign rally on June 7, and has been hospitalised since, a Reuters report said.

"I ask God to show me the way to learn to live without you," his wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, wrote in an Instagram post.

In July, the Colombian police announced that they had arrested five suspects in the case. This included a 15-year-old alleged shooter, as well as the alleged mastermind behind the conspiracy, Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez. Police statements in July said that Uribe had persuaded the teenager to carry out the attack.

Uribe, a sharp critic of left-wing President Gustavo Petro, had announced his candidacy for Colombia's 2026 presidential elections, last October.

At just 25, he was elected to Bogota's city council, where took a vocal stance against Petro—who was then the capital city's mayor—criticising the latter's handling of waste management and social programs.

In the 2022 legislative elections, Uribe led the Senate slate for the Democratic Center party with the slogan "Colombia First", winning a seat in the chamber, the Reuters report added.

Colombia has not seen high-profile assassination attempts since the era of drug lord and narcoterrorist Pablo Escobar, and his Medellin Cartel in the early 1990s.

In fact, Uribe's mother Diana Turbay, a journalist, was even killed in 1991 during a rescue operation after she was kidnapped by Escobar's cartel, a BBC News report said. His father was a union leader and businessman.
