Russia's private mercenary group Wagner's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday questioned the reasons given by Russian military for invading Ukraine. Prigozhin alleged that the Russian military deceived the public on the reasons behind the invasion.

In a social media post, Prigozhin criticised the Russian military for 'deceiving' the society on reasons behind why the whole invasion was launched. The Wagener group chief dismissed Kremlin’s claims that Ukraine was planning to launch an offensive on the Russian-controlled territories in eastern Ukraine in February last year.

The Guardian quoted Prigozhin as saying, “There was nothing extraordinary happening on the eve of February 24. The Ministry of Defence is trying to deceive the public and the president and spin the story that there were insane levels of aggression from the Ukrainian side and that they were going to attack us together with the whole Nato block.”

Prigozhin claimed that the war was started for totally different reasons. He added that war could have been avoided through talks. “Russia’s leadership could have avoided the war by negotiating with Ukraine’s president,” the Wagner chief said.
