United Nations' nuclear watchdog chief said that he hopes the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war wouldn't escalate to a nuclear conflict.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi was quoted telling in an interview that nuclear weapons wouldn't be used in the ongoing war. "A nuclear war can never be won and must never be fought," Grossi was quoted saying by TASS agency.

"I’m not passing judgment on comments of high officials of any country. Certainly, I hope that there will be no nuclear use during this conflict, absolutely," Grossi was quoted as saying in response to Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev’s remark on the use of nuclear weapons in the ongoing war.

Grossi has been holding discussions with Russian and Ukraine authorities to set up safety and protection zones at nuclear plants in Ukraine. IAEA recently set up a permanent mission at South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant to ensure its nuclear safety. Grossi earlier said the IAEA mission would be soon present in all Ukraine nuclear plants.

Grossi said discussions regarding setting up a protection zone around Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe's largest nuclear facility was complex. "This major nuclear power plant continues to face daily dangers. Our team there continues to hear explosions close to the site, including two on Thursday," Grossi was quoted saying by the publication.
