China, on Tuesday, protested testing mandates introduced for flyers from China in countries like the United States, France and Canada. Beijing is threatening countermeasures against countries involved based on reciprocity.

“We believe that the entry restrictions adopted by some countries targeting China lack scientific basis, and some excessive practices are even more unacceptable," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, AP reported.

“We are firmly opposed to attempts to manipulate the Covid measures for political purposes and will take countermeasures based on the principle of reciprocity.”

Chinese media has been, in the meantime, playing down the severity of a surge of the virus ahead of a briefing by its scientists to the World Health Organization, Reuters reported.

China, on December 7, dismantled its strict zero-Covid policy, which involved mass testing and stringent lockdowns. And now, the virus infections are spreading. Also, reportedly, funeral parlours are seeing a spike in demand for their services.
