Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Bali, Indonesia, for the G20 Summit, which opened on Tuesday morning. On his arrival at the Summit venue, the Prime Minister was accorded a warm welcome by Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The Summit, for which leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies have converged in Bali, is themed 'Recover Together, Recover Stronger' and focuses on global economic recovery, global health architecture, digital transformation, sustainable energy transition and climate change, among other topics.

Officially declaring the Summit opened, Indonesian President Widodo said that the eyes of the world were focused on their meeting. Adding that the Summit must succeed and cannot fail, Widodo said the world faces "crisis upon crisis, sharpening rivalries."

The Indonesian President added that the world is facing extraordinary challenges, and the impact of these is felt very strongly on food and energy supplies. He added that the G20 must be a catalyst for inclusive economic recovery.

Indonesia, which chairs the 17th G20, has earlier called for the European Commission and the G7 bloc to lend "support and flexibility" so that the summit can produce concrete results, reported Reuters.

PM to hold bilateral talks

Before his departure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that he would hold extensive discussions with other G20 leaders on key issues of global concern, such as reviving global growth, food and energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation.

"On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, I will meet with leaders of several other participating countries, and review the progress in India’s bilateral relations with them," he said on Monday.

The G20 comprises 19 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the USA and the European Union (EU). Together, they account for over 80 per cent of the global GDP, 75 per cent of international trade and two-thirds of the world population.

Other highlights

US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping too arrived at the G20 venue on Tuesday. This comes as both leaders held their first-ever face-to-meeting in a bid to reduce tensions over Taiwan and trade amid the bilateral relations hitting its lowest point.

After his arrival, President Biden tweeted: "At the G20 meetings, we’ll speak on the very issues that matter to people’s lives, not only at home but around the world. This forum is crucial for the world’s largest economies to work together for the good of people everywhere, and I’m looking forward to convening."

Zelenskyy to speak

As per the latest reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address world leaders at the crucial summit. The Ukrainian President had earlier hailed the Biden-Xi meeting stating that it was "important that the United States and China jointly highlighted that the threats of using nuclear weapons were unacceptable."
