Robert Solis, 50, was sentenced to death by a jury in the US state of Texas over the killing of Sandeep Dhaliwal, the United States's first Sikh deputy. 

Sandeep was the first Sikh officer appointed for the Harris County department. According to reports, he was killed during duty in September 2019. The officer had turned up to arrest Solis for violating parole norms when the incident happened. 

After he was found guilty of the charged murder, the Jury had announced the verdict on Wednesday. 

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez in his tweet said that "Verdict is in: Jurors sentence Robert Solis to death. We are extremely grateful that justice has been served. Sandeep changed our Sheriff's office family for better, and we continue striving to live up to his example of servant leadership. May he Rest in Peace." 

"The defendant executed a uniformed deputy by shooting him in the head in broad daylight. That makes him the worst of the worst, which is why we asked jurors to sentence him to death," reported ANI quoting Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg in a statement. 

It was on September 27, 2019, the incident happened where Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop. According to his fellow officers, Sandeep was known for his sense of humour.
