Rishi Sunak met with King Charles III to be anointed Britain's first Indian-origin Prime Minister. Sunak has taken over as PM after Liz Truss stepped down after a short but tumultuous tenure lasting 45 days.
In his first address from No 10 Downing Street, Sunak began by paying tribute to former PM Liz Truss. "It is only right to explain why I am standing here as your new prime minister," he says, the BBC reported.
"Right now our country is facing a profound economic crisis. The aftermath of Covid still lingers," he added.
While saying that the Truss government made some mistakes, he added that her aim to improve growth in this country was a 'noble aim '. He went on to say that the work to fix mistakes made by his predecessor 'begins immediately.'
"I will work day in and day out to deliver for you," Sunak and added that in his time as chancellor, he did everything he could to protect businesses through schemes such as furlough. Sunak also assured that he will not leave the next generation with a debt 'we were too weak to pay ourselves.' "I will unite our country not with words but with action," the PM added.

Trust is earned, the new PM said and added that his government will have integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level. Sunak also promised, "a stronger NHS, better schools, safer streets, control of our borders, protecting our environment, supporting our armed forces and levelling up."
After thanking former PM Boris Johnson for "incredible achievements" as prime minister, he acknowledged hardships saying, “I fully appreciate how hard things are." Before concluding his speech and entering No 10 Sunak said he isn't daunted by the pressures of the job. He also said he would lead the country "into the future and put your needs above politics", and would build a government that "represents the best of my party".
