North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised to help build at least 25,000 houses over the next five years in typhoon-hit areas, the state media said on Wednesday. The plan to build these homes will be unveiled in January and will be built only in place of the houses destroyed by natural disasters, he said.

While visiting the rural town of Komdok on Wednesday, Kim said that the military will embark on a more ambitious construction plan, KCNA reported. The leader expressed regret that the “more than 50 years old” houses were destroyed by the typhoon.

Over the weekend, Kim Jong Un also apologised for not being able to guide the country through tough times exacerbated by the coronavirus crisis. Addressing the people at the 75th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party, the leader said, “Our people have placed trust, as high as the sky and as deep as the sea, in me, but I have failed to always live up to it satisfactorily. I am really sorry about that.”

According to the state media, the military reached a construction level of 60 per cent for at least 2,300 houses in the Komdok area in South Hamgyong province.

Last week, the leader called on his country to embark on an 80-day “speed battle” to combat losses the nation faced due to tough anti-coronavirus measures clubbed with international sanctions and several typhoons.
