Two people were killed, 14 injured in a mass shooting in Rochester, New York. The shooting took place at a party, where a male and female student died. The police said the 14 people who were injured were taken to two different hospitals. Some of them were said to have life-threatening injuries. According to the police, approximately 100 people fled the scene as the shooting took place. The incident took place in a residential area near Goodman Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

The incident comes months after Daniel Prude’s death, that was the result of asphyxiation by the police while trying to restrain Prude, an African-American man, who was having a mental health episode. Prude’s death rocked the Rochester police department when the case was investigated in August and as an effect, seven officers involved in detaining Prude were suspended.

The shooting took place at 12.30am local time in the backyard of a house. So far no official statement has been made about the status of the shooter or shooters. Interim police chief Mark Simmons was quoted in a Guardian report as saying, “This is yet another tragedy where individuals are having these illegal, unsanctioned house parties taking place in these properties, which number one is not safe because of COVID, because of the conditions. And then you add in alcohol and violence and it just becomes a recipe for disaster.”

Currently, gatherings of more than 50 people are restricted in New York state.
