On Sunday, a businessman in Singapore served biryanis to 600 Muslim migrant workers, who were spending the holiday in dormitories, away from home, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dushyant Kumar and his wife used a family recipe to cook the popular dish made from rice and meat for the occasion.

“Usually, if they are with their family, they will get to enjoy these kinds of dishes, because everyone will cook and eat, but here these guys are alone,” Kumar said as he made the dish from the kitchen of a restaurant.

Singapore has around 300,000 foreign labourers and most of them are from China, Bangladesh and India. A lot of them live in dormitories.

Kumar added that he did not want the labourers to feel left out and revealed that his initiative was supported by funds from individual donors and a non-government organisation.

“The smile on their face gives you a lot of satisfaction,” Kumar was quoted as saying in a Reuters report. Ever since lockdown measures had been imposed in Singapore in early April, Kumar has been overseeing the delivery of more than 1,000 meals a day to migrants.

As per government instructions, employers are required to provide sufficient food for workers during this lockdown, but it is also working with charity groups to make up for any shortfalls.

Singapore has so far reported more than 30,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
