The US Department of Defense authorised USD 1 billion to build part of the wall demanded by President Donald Trump along the US-Mexico border on Monday.

Pentagon acting chief Patrick Shanahan said he had authorised “the commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers to begin planning and executing up to USD 1 billion in support to the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Patrol,” read a statement released by the Pentagon.

The Department of Homeland Security asked the Pentagon to build 92km of 5.5-meter fencing, build and improve roads, and install lighting to support Trump's emergency declaration regarding the border.

Trump had declared a national emergency last month in an attempt to have his plan for a border wall funded without the approval of the Congress.

The Pentagon, last week, gave Congress a list that included USD 12.8 billion of construction projects and said that funds for the same can be redirected to building the wall along the border US-Mexico.
