A powerful undersea earthquake measuring a magnitude 7.1 struck near New Caledonia in the South Pacific on Wednesday, creating small tsunami waves.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat. It said that waves 17 cm high reached the shore of the Loyalty Islands.
The epicentre is at a depth of 26.7 km and is 372 km east of the New Caledonia capital Noumea, according to the United States Geological Survey website.
No damage has been reported yet.
