The Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) has emerged as an important centre for research on modern Indian history, with extensive archives and digital exhibits that bring the country’s past to life, Dr Ravi K Mishra, Joint Director of PMML, said at The Week Heritage Awards 2026 in New Delhi.

During a talk, Mishra spoke about the institution’s research resources, academic activities and technological initiatives, with a focus on the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14, 2022.

Established in 1966 as the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, PMML preserves documents and records relating to modern and contemporary India. Its private papers collection contains more than three crore pages of records relating to around 1,300 prominent individuals and institutions.

The institution also has 40,000 to 50,000 microfilm and microfiche records, including historical newspapers, private papers and gazetteers dating back to the 19th century. Its oral history programme has recorded interviews with more than 1,000 people associated with modern Indian history.

PMML’s research and publications division has produced around 100 works, including multi-volume collections on former prime ministers and other prominent national leaders. Its Centre for Contemporary Studies organises conferences, seminars, lectures and other academic programmes.

Mishra highlighted the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya as a major attraction on the campus. The museum traces the lives and contributions of all Indian prime ministers since Independence, using digital technology to present their work and the political history of the country.

Its exhibits include interactive touch tables, robotic writers, augmented and virtual reality displays, and a virtual helicopter ride. The museum also features artificial intelligence-based interactive models of national figures, including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The PMML campus also houses the Nehru Planetarium, which attracts an estimated three to four lakh visitors annually, and Kushak Mahal, a 14th-century monument protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Mishra said the institution continued to attract scholars, students and visitors from India and abroad through its combination of historical collections, research facilities and technology-based exhibits.
