Elavenil Valarivan on Sunday won double silver medals for India, finishing on the podium in the individual 10m air rifle event after claiming the team silver earlier in the day.

In the individual event, the Indian ace, who won the 2025 World Championship bronze, shot 252.4 points in the final to finish behind Japan's Hinata Taichi at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. The local talent won gold with an Asian Games record of 253.0, while South Korea's Hyojin Ban took bronze with 230.4.

Elavenil entered the final two shots just 0.3 points behind Taichi and remained in contention after shooting 10.4 to the Japanese shooter's 10.6, which stretched the gap to 0.5. Needing a strong final shot to turn the tables, Elavenil managed 10.1, but Taichi held her nerve with a 10.2 to seal the gold and set a new Asian Games record, news agency PTI reported.

Earlier in the day, alongside Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod, Elavenil helped claim the silver in the women's 10m air rifle team for India. There was little to separate India and hosts Japan in the battle for the remaining medals, but the Indians held their nerves when it mattered. Japan finished third with 1,897.1, just 0.9 points adrift of India, after a tense contest for the silver.

They finished behind a dominant Chinese team that shattered the qualification world record with 1,904.2 points. China bettered its own previous mark of 1,902.0, set at the Asian Championships in Shymkent in August last year, a record that had also stood as the Asian record.

India now has two shooting medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games — both silver — giving an encouraging start to their shooting campaign after they produced a record 22-medal haul — seven gold, nine silver, and six bronze — at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
