On Monday morning, the BCCI Centre of Excellence stadium in Karnataka witnessed Day 2 of the Duleep Trophy semi-final between East Zone and Central Zone. East Zone’s opening pair, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran, began their first innings after Central Zone were bowled out for 266 on Day 1. Little did the crowd know that they were witnessing history in the making.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi batted his way to a half-century in 42 deliveries. Why does it matter? At just 15 years and 157 days, he has broken the record for the youngest player to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy.

The milestone was previously held by Laxman Singh, who at the age of 16 years and 23 days scored a half-century in 1969. Singh, who used to represent Rajasthan in domestic cricket, managed the feat while playing for Central Zone against North Zone in the 1969 Duleep Trophy.

Vaibhav’s batting came to an end as he got caught out at deep mid-wicket by Arshad Khan off a ball from Harsh Dubey. He fell eight runs short of his century, smashing seven boundaries and sixes. By then, however, the Vaibhav-Abhimanyu partnership had helped East Zone reach an opening-wicket partnership of over 100 runs.

Earlier, Vaibhav was dropped by Yash Rathord while he was batting on 40. It was Saransh Jain who was bowling to Vaibhav at that point when East Zone were cruising at 82 for no loss. Vaibhav tried to slice the ball towards the on-side but didn’t connect cleanly, as it went towards backward point to Rathord.

If Vaibhav had not gone out for 92 off 81 balls and had scored his maiden Duleep Trophy century, he would have also held the record for the youngest centurion in the history of the Duleep Trophy. Currently, Prithvi Shaw holds that record as the youngest at 17 years and 320 days.

Nevertheless, the youngster, who bagged an IPL contract at the age of 13, now holds multiple records in domestic and international cricket. The aggressive batter is currently the fastest to 1,000 T20 runs, reaching the mark in just 473 balls.

In List A cricket, he is the fastest to 150 runs, breaking AB de Villiers' record, needing only 59 balls to reach the milestone. In June 2026, he smashed a fifty off just 11 deliveries against Sri Lanka A, scoring the fastest List A fifty for India A.
