No match has ever ended in a draw when India and Pakistan have faced each other in the Hockey World Cup. As India aims for its second world cup title, the team will face Pakistan in the group stage on August 19. India leads the head-to-head 3-2 against Pakistan in the coveted event.

The last time Pakistan won against India in the world cup was back in the 1986 edition held in London. This will also be the first time in 16 years that the arch-rivals will be playing against each other in the World Cup.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced that this edition of World Cup will be held from August 15 to 30 in the Netherlands and Belgium. The Indian men’s hockey team faces Wales, England, and Pakistan in Pool D. All India matches are to be held at the Wagener Stadium, Amstelveen, in the Netherlands.

The two nations will be facing each other for the third time in 2026, with India dominating the rivalry over the last five matches. In fact, the last time India was forced to a draw against Pakistan was back in 2022.

In the last India-Pakistan match, played on June 26 in the FIH Pro League, India won by a stunning 7-1. Interestingly each goal India scored was with a different player. Pakistan’s Abu Baker Mahmood scored the first goal of the match at the 13th minute, from thereon India scored its seven goals up until the 54th minute. Indian goal scorers were Sukhjeet Singh 20’, Harmanpreet Singh 26’, Hardik Singh 34’, Jugaraj Singh 35’, Abhishek 41’, Raj Kumar Pal 44’, and finally Dilpreet Singh 54’.

Of the last five matches, the most dominating performance from India came at the Asian Games 2022 held at Hangzhou, China. India gifted Pakistan a humiliating defeat with 10 goals against 1. India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh scored four out of the 10 goals in that match.

So one might want to ask, is this even a rivalry anymore?

The men’s national teams of India and Pakistan have played 183 matches against each other. And Pakistan leads the overall head to head with 82 wins against India’s 69. In the Olympics and Asian Games too, Pakistan holds the lead with four wins against India’s two, and eight matches against five, respectively.

As per the rules of the FIH World Cup, two teams from each of the two second round pools will reach the semifinals, with the winners contesting the final.

From August 15 onwards, India will aim to repeat its glory of the 1975 World Cup triumph.
