Australian women’s cricket team vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner has split from her wife, Monica Wright, causing tension within the team.

The separation was reportedly messy and has become a controversy after Wright accused Gardner of infidelity and named an Australian teammate in a series of posts on Instagram.

Gardner married Wright, an environmental scientist, in April last year in a private ceremony after they met on a dating app in 2020. Their marriage was attended by several members of the Australian team.

The tension between the couple emerged last year when Wright flew to India to join her wife for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

According to a source who spoke to the Daily Mail, the couple was awkward during the tour.

'It was like something was a little bit off with Ash, but we thought it was because of the pressure of the World Cup,' the source said. Gardner reportedly didn't act herself.

The two talked after they returned to their Northern Beaches home in Sydney following the World Cup. Gardner reportedly told Wright why things were off during her visit to India. Wright was reportedly 'shattered' and 'distraught'.

Gardner also moved out of the home the couple shared in November. The source said that Gardner removed all her belongings “She left the wedding rings in the cupboard. Just the box of wedding rings, and that was it.”

In the Instagram posts, Wright alleged that Gardner cheated on her and posted the photo of Australian opener Georgia Voll with the caption  "This is who my wife cheated on me with..."

The post has now gone viral.

Gardner, Voll and the team have not responded to the allegations. Wright also removed photographs of Gardner, including images of their wedding ceremony, from her Instagram account.

Gardner is one of Australia's most accomplished all-rounders and has been with the national team for a decade.

The controversy comes at a time when the team is preparing for a busy international schedule.
