According to available information, it was the noted football journalist Jota Jordi who broke the news of Alvarez's second innings in England. But the shocking part of the transfer news is not Arsenal scoring a win where both Barcelona and Real Madrid failed, but the way they sealed it.
According to Jota Jordi, Arsenal managed to win the deal by proposing a player swap with the La Liga club. The Gunners have offered €50 million in cash along with their striker Viktor Gyokeres, he claimed on X.
Jordi’s claim, if found to be true, could upset French football fans as it was earlier claimed that the talented striker had decided to ditch Arsenal for PSG. The two sides, which met in the final of the UEFA Champions League, had emerged as the frontrunners for the former Manchester City star’s signature after Barcelona backed out.
Gyokeres, who is also on World Cup duty for Sweden, arrived last season from Sporting CP after an epic transfer saga. He had a difficult start to the campaign but gradually settled in—playing an integral part in their league title as well as their second-place finish in the European competition. His tally was 21 goals in 55 appearances across competitions for Mikel Arteta’s side.
With Gyokeres and €50 million cash involved in the mouth-watering deal, the entire Alvarez transfer, if completed, could cost the Gunners around €152 million. The 26-year-old Alvarez is Atlético's second most expensive signing ever—costing €75 million. Both Gyokeres and Alvarez have got four years left on their respective current contracts.
