After Alexander Isak was helped off the field with an apparent left ankle injury sustained in the act of scoring for Liverpool against Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday, the defending champions fear their record signing will miss the remainder of the season.

Isak may have suffered a broken bone, if not worse, reports coming from Merseyside hint, after Spurs centre-back Micky van de Ven slid in with a challenge that connected with the Sweden striker's ankle.

While it was not immediately known if the striker injured his ligaments, the timeframe for Isak’s return will depend on the severity of the fracture. If it is a fracture after all, a bone break could be the best to hope for, as it would take less recovery time, while any ligament damage could keep him away well into the summer, reports claimed. A bone fracture means Isak could be match-fit by the March–April period. Some reports said that it will be early May when he will be able to take the field again.

It is also noteworthy that the former Newcastle United man had already missed four games earlier in the season, limiting him to 10 starts for the club so far.

Isak spent several minutes on the floor before walking off gingerly with the help of two members of Liverpool's medical staff, and Slot said his "gut feeling" was that Isak's injury could be a serious one, though he tried to be optimistic. "I don't have any news on him, but if a player scores and then gets injured and doesn't come back on the pitch and also doesn't try to come back... that's usually not a good thing," he told reporters.

Earlier, European football portals had said that Liverpool will conduct further tests once Alexander Isak's MRI scan results are out to understand the exact extent of the injury. A broken leg will force the club to splash more money in the January transfer window, as manager Arne Slot is not happy with starting Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha alongside Hugo Ekitiké. Cody Gakpo is also nursing an injury while Mohamed Salah is not in great form, making reinforcements necessary for the team.

Following the Spurs encounter, Slot said he thought Liverpool were improving after a summer of upheaval which contributed to a dreadful run of form, though the Reds are now unbeaten in six in all competitions.
