Shreyas Iyer discharged from hospital; Sydney rehab continues

Indian cricket fans heaved a sigh of relief today after ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was discharged from the hospital on Saturday (November 1). His recovery has been steady but Iyer will continue to stay in Sydney for a few more days, the BCCI said in a statement.

Iyer, who suffered a lower rib injury while fielding during the second ODI against Australia, had subsequently developed internal bleeding. As his health declined, the Mumbai batter had to be moved to the ICU temporarily. 

"Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on 25th October 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding," read BCCI's latest statement released by secretary Devajit Saikia.

"The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same. He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today."

BCCI's medical staff will evaluate Iyer's physical condition once he returns to India but the timeline isn't confirmed yet. The Indian team team doctor is still in Sydney with the cricketer to monitor his daily progress. The Board revealed that the future course of action for Iyer will be decided in due course.

"The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly."
