'We have zero tolerance for such incidents': BCCI to tighten security in Women's ODI World Cup after Indore harassment incident

The BCCI promised an increase in security levels while reacting to the harassment of two Australian women cricketers in Indore

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (October 25) has condemned the harassment incident endured by two members of Australia women's cricket team in Indore. The unfortunate event occurred on Thursday (October 23) morning when the two players were harassed by a motorcyclist while the duo was on their way to a nearby cafe in the city.

The accused was traced by the number plate of his bike and Indore police has arrested the person responsible for the shameful act. On Saturday evening, the BCCI issued a public statement condemning the events of October 23 and vowed to tighten the security around the ongoing Women's ODI World Cup.

"It is a very condemnable but stray incident. India is known for its hospitality and care. We have zero tolerance for such incidents," said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.

"We appreciate the State Police (Madhya Pradesh) for their prompt action to nab the culprit. Let the law take its course to punish the culprit. We assure to revisit our safety protocols if required to further tighten the security," said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.

While the identities of the two players are being protected for obvious reasons, the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association had earlier in its official statement unintentionally revealed that both players were part of Australia's playing XI in their final league game against South Africa in Indore. The State association also condemned the attack.

"An unfortunate incident has come to our notice. A couple of Australian players were subjected to inappropriate behavior by a miscreant," said an MPCA official.

"We have reported it to the police and the authorities have tracked down the culprit. We're cooperating with the investigation. "We are happy that the two players are on the field today."

Australia completed their league engagements with a crushing seven-wicket win over South Africa on Saturday (October 25), thereby setting up a semifinal date with co-hosts India. The Proteas women, meanwhile, will face England in the other semifinal.
