With weeks to go for the Super Cup 2025-26 to begin, Kerala Blasters have shored up their attack by signing a new striker, Koldo Obieta Alberdi from Spain. The centre-forward joins on a one-year contract, from Real Unión. It is Kerala Blasters’ first foreign signing ahead of the IPL 2025-26 season.
Born in Gernika, Basque Country, Koldo started his football journey at his hometown club, Gernika Club, before making his senior debut in 2012. He has played for Spanish clubs such as Zamudio, SD Amorebieta, CD Tudelano, and AD Alcorcón.
“Koldo combines physical presence with aerial threat, good positioning, and finishing skills both inside the box and on transitions,” the Blasters said in the press release. “While he naturally leads the line, he has shown versatility in recent seasons, adapting well to different forward roles within his team's setups.”
Kerala Blasters Sporting Director Karolis Skinkys said that Koldo’s addition to the squad will give the team more options in attack. “Obieta is an experienced forward who has played across several Spanish clubs. We believe his qualities will give us more options in attack, and we look forward to bringing him into the team and seeing the qualities he can add to our attack.”
Koldo will join his teammates during the pre-season camp in Goa. Commenting on his signing, the 31-year-old Spaniard said: “When I received the offer, I looked up the club on the internet and saw so much about the fans. I’m very proud to be a part of this family. I can’t wait to step onto the pitch and give my best.”
Kerala Blasters have been drawn in Group D of Super Cup, which begins on October 25, alongside Mumbai City FC, Hyderabad FC and Rajasthan United FC. The Yellow Army will begin their campaign on October 30 against Rajasthan United FC at the Bambolim Stadium. On November 3, they will return to Bambolim to face Hyderabad FC, and then take on Mumbai City FC on November 6 at the Fatorda Stadium.
The Blasters were knocked out in the quarterfinals in the last season of the Super Cup, losing 1-2 to Mohun Bagan SG.
They released two of their foreign strikers – Jesús Jiménez and Kwame Peprah – after the ISL 2024-25 season, where they finished eighth. They also parted ways with centre-back Miloš Drinčić, forward Ishan Pandita, midfielder Saurav Mandal and goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh.
