England and South Africa are set to play a three-match bilateral ODI series that kicks-off on Tuesday (September 2). With the next ICC ODI tournament being the World Cup in 2027, it is an opportunity for both teams to build steadily towards that mega event. This series, like many bilaterals that shall follow, would be the platform for teams to identify their player pool for the World Cup.
For England, it is crucial to start their ground work at the earliest, given their woeful form in the 50-over format in recent times. While the 3-0 whitewash win in West Indies came as a timely boost, England only won seven of the previous 14 bilateral ODIs, sandwiched between disappointing campaigns in the 2023 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Therefore, young captain Harry Brook will hope that his transitioning side starts to regain its footing in ODI cricket.
South Africa, meanwhile, are fresh off a big series win in Australia, where they sealed the series 2-1, although the heavy drubbing in the dead rubber would have been embarrassing. They also have been inconsistent in the bilaterals prior to the Australia tour, and are a transitioning side, much like England. The influx of youth in the middle order makes for exciting viewing, and this could be a series that would be decided by which of the middle orders does a better job.
