After weeks of anticipation, the Newcastle United-Alexander Isak-Liverpool deadlock has seemingly reached a solution. On Saturday (August 30), Liverpool's latest bid of £130 million has reportedly been agreed upon by representatives from Newcastle United. An official confirmation on this is awaited but key figures in British media have already expressed their confidence regarding the deal being sorted.
Jan Aage Fjortoft, former Middlesborough player and senior journalist, took to the social media platform to reveal this bit of news.
“Newcastle away at Leeds tonight, so nothing expected before that I am told. Fee will be £130m," wrote Fjortoft from his personal X account.
“Isak to Liverpool likely to happen very soon.”
If this deal does go through, it will be a Premier League record transfer, thereby sending Liverpool's already mind-boggling transfer windo to an altogether different level. It must be remembered that Liverpool's initial bid of £110 million was rejected downright by Newcastle United who were also projecting their stance of Isak not being on sale. This, however, was also due to their understanding which told them that the Swedish striker wasn't intending to leave.
All that changed when Isak made his intentions to leave public. It didn't sit down well with the Magpies management and coach Eddie Howe was caught in the player-board crossfire, subsequently benching Isak from Newcastle's Premier League games this season. Isak's public post on social media only added fuel to the fire while Liverpool had decided not to bid again until they got a hint from Newcastle United. As per latest reports, that seems to have happened and the Isak deal is all set to go through in the coming days.
According to transfer window expert Fraser Fletcher, the final numbers could even be higher, given that Newcastle United's private valuation of Isak stands at an astounding £150 million. It might not be a figure that Liverpool would touch, and perhaps, a middle ground may have to be found for the two parties. Either ways, the deal is reportedly all but done.
Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike are already big-money signings for the Premier League champions but Isak's deal is the icing on the cake, so to speak. It bolsters the attack and gives the Reds's manager Arne Slot a plethora of enviable attacking options. Liverpool have started their title defence in style, with two thrilling high-scoring wins of 4-2 and 3-2, against Bournemouth and Newcastle United respectively.
