Brazilian soccer legend Pele has reportedly been moved to a palliative care ward after he stopped responding to chemotherapy, said reports quoting Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.
The 82-year-old, considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, is battling colon cancer. Pele was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday to re-evaluate his cancer treatment.
Both the footballer's manager and the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, where he has been admitted, have not responded to the reports.
According to the newspaper, the hospital has suspended the chemotherapy and Pele is now being treated only for symptoms such as pain and shortness of breath.
However, a medical report released on Friday mentioned Pele was in a stable condition "with a general improvement in health status". It added that Pele had an adequate response to antibiotic treatment. He had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and has been receiving hospital treatment since then.
Pele too had confirmed in an Instagram post on Thursday that he was at the hospital for a "monthly visit." He also thanked his supporters for the positive messages.
