Sania Mirza to retire after US Open this year: Report

Sania Mirza will retire after the US Open – the last Grand Slam of the year. The 35-year-old Indian tennis star had announced earlier this year that 2022 will be the last in her professional career.

Mirza, who is currently in Rome preparing for the French Open, told Anandabazar Online about her decision to retire after the tournament which starts on August 29, and also said she plans to play the Wimbledon, too.

The French Open will start on May 22, while Wimbledon will be from June 26 to July 10.

The Indian tennis icon recently won the Italian Open women's doubles title with Martina Hingis, and has set her sights on Roland Garros.

Sania made her debut in 2003, and went on to become the doubles world number one, winning six Grand Slams in doubles. She became the first Indian player to breach the top 30 in world rankings in August 2007, when she became world number 27.

Mirza, on January 19 this year, had announced that she will hang up her racquet at the end of the 2022 season as her body was "wearing down" and the motivation and energy for everyday grind was not the same anymore.
