Former India footballer Subhas Bhowmick died at a city hospital on Saturday following prolonged illness. He was 71.
Bhowmick, popularly known as 'Bhombolda' was hospitalised with diabetic problems and kidney ailments and died at around 3.30am.
Bhowmick was a striker and played for East Bengal and Mohun Bagan and represented India in several international tournaments.
He was also successful as coach of clubs like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting, Salgaocar and Churchill Brothers.

Besides winning the bronze medal at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok, Bhowmick was also a triumphant member of the Indian National team which finished joint winners at Pesta Sukan Cup against South Vietnam in Singapore (1971), and a bronze medal in the Merdeka Cup in 1970.
For Bengal, Bhowmick won the Santhosh Trophy four times out the seven years years he participated, scoring 24 goals.
As coach, Bhowmick coached the national team in the Vith President Gold Cup in Dhaka in 1989.
At the domestic level, his biggest achievement as a coach came in 2003 when he coached East Bengal to win the LG Asean Club Cup in Jakarta.
He was technical director of Churchill Brothers when the Goan side won the I-League in 2012-13.
