Hours after removing the verified badge on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s account, Twitter restored it. The former skipper who last tweeted on January 8 this year, had his blue tick removed, leading to protests from his fans on the social networking and micro-blogging platform.

The former India skipper has over 8 million followers on Twitter.

The verification badge is Twitter’s way of acknowledging that an account is authentic. The social media platform was quoted by ANI as saying that the blue tick has been restored, and that it was removed as the account had been inactive since February 2021 and according to Twitter verification policy, it may remove the blue verified badge and verified status if the account becomes inactive or is incomplete.

“Inactivity is based on logging in. To keep the account active, the account holder must make sure to log in at least every 6 months," Twitter was quoted as saying.

His fans took to social media to register their protest against the removal of the verification badge, and soon ‘blue tick’ was trending on Twitter.

Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, having last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand.

Dhoni now plays only in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Chennai Super Kings skipper will be back in action when the UAE leg of IPL resumes in September, when Mumbai Indians will take on CSK on September 19, 2021. The IPL had to be postponed mid-way because of COVID-19 pandemic.
