France, Germany and Portugal all advanced to the round of 16

With the help of a Cristiano Ronaldo brace, Portugal drew with France 2-2 to keep their Euro dreams alive as the Group F final games came to a breathless conclusion. The group has three big contenders in France, Germany and Portugal, all of whom advanced to the round of 16, leaving Hungary—who drew with Germany 2-2 in a brave fight—back in the fourth place.

With two penalties in the 30th and 60th minutes, Ronaldo has now levelled the record 109 international goals scored by Iran's Ali Daei. He is already the highest-ever scorer in the Euros. France began brightly with Paul Pogba sending Mbappe through for a shot saved by Rui Patricio, but Portugal were awarded a penalty in the 27th minute after Hugo Lloris's attempted punched clearance wiped out Danilo. For France, recently reintroduced Karim Benzema stepped up—he scored in the 45th minute off a penalty, and later put them ahead by finishing off a Paul Pogba through ball a few minutes into the second half.

It was a nerve-wracking game for the Portuguese. At times in the second half, before Ronaldo equalised, it looked like champions Portugal were out of the tournament. Hungary was leading Germany (albeit temporarily) and Portugal looked to be in the fourth place. Portugal will now face Belgium in Seville, France will take on Switzerland, and Germany will take on England in the rounds of 16.

Portugal manager Fernando Santos said after the game: "When I was asked what we had to do that was different from the game against Germany and I said it was to be like ourselves. We were strong, consistent, with a great spirit. We can continue to improve."
