The Supreme Court is set to hear BCCI’s plea regarding several amendments to the board’s constitution. Among the amendments proposed is scrapping off of the cooling period for office bearers of the BCCI board. This could directly decide the fate of BCCI president Saurav Ganguly and board secretary Jay Shah.

The hearing will take place virtually as per new norms amidst the COVID-19 crisis. The bench will comprise Chief Justice SA Bode and Justice L Nageshwar Rao. Both Ganguly and Shah were elected last October as per the new constitution framed under the guidelines of the Lodha Committee. This was mandated by the court in 2016. At present there is a mandatory cooling-off period of three years after an office bearer completes six years at the BCCI or state level or a combination of both. Both Ganguly and Shah will have completed their six years of service this year having started as office bearers at the Cricket Association of Bengal and the Gujarat Cricket Association respectively. While Shah’s term has already expired, Ganguly’s expires on July 27.

The BCCI is looking for a change in the present rule so that both Ganguly and Shah can serve as president and secretary for two consecutive terms (six years) solely at the BCCI without taking into account their time at the state levels.
